Tracking player development: handball stats for youth teams and parents

For youth coaches and parents who want to see how a player develops over the season – not just how the last game went.

In short: single games say little, development over many games says a lot. Most telling are shot rate, shot pattern (from where, to where), the kind of missed shots and turnovers – as a trend, not a snapshot.

Stats in youth handball: what they’re good for

Numbers make progress visible that is easy to miss from the sideline: the back-court player misses less often, the left wing draws more penalties, the goalkeeper now saves almost everything low left. They also help in conversation – “in the last five games you shot from the back court three times as often” is more tangible than “shoot more”.

A word of caution: young players develop at different speeds, and a number quickly becomes a verdict. Best compare a player with themselves over time, not players with each other – and no ranking on the changing-room wall.

Which numbers say something about development

NumberWhat it shows
Shot rate (goals ÷ shots)Finishing efficiency. More important than the goal count: whoever takes on more responsibility shoots more – and often scores less at first.
From where they shootDo they dare to shoot from the back court? Do the goals only come from the pivot or on the break? The mix shifts as confidence grows.
Where to they shootThe shot pattern in the goal. Always aiming for the same corner makes a player predictable – a good training cue.
Kind of missed shotsSaved, blocked or missed: three different things to work on – placement, shot preparation, technique.
TurnoversPassing security and decisions under pressure. If they drop over the season, that’s real progress.
Assists, steals, blocksThe part of the game that never makes the scorer list – game sense and defence.
Save percentage and save patternFor goalkeepers: how much they save and in which corners they are strong or weak.

Rule of thumb: only from about five games do numbers become a trend. Before that, opponent, playing time and form of the day matter more than development.

What to look for in a stats app

How to do it with myHandballStats

Setting up

Create the team and players once, see Getting started. If shirts change, enter number and position per game in the squad selection; “Use numbers and positions from last match” handles the next game with one tap.

Only one child in focus? Pin them.

If as a parent you only follow your own daughter or son, pin that player in the game view (Pin). The action tiles then count straight for them: the first tap picks the action, every further tap counts +1, a long press subtracts 1. The tiles show that player’s own numbers. This is free.

Recording the shot pattern Premium

Every shot can carry a shot position (from where) and goal zone (where to). That feeds the heatmaps in the player detail – across all their games. What each detail means is on What counts as what?

Looking at the trend

Weren’t there live?

Numbers can be entered after the game as totals per player, e.g. from the official score sheet, see End a game and enter totals. That way you don’t get a shot pattern, of course.

Recording together

One parent taps the goals, another the saves: with a live session several devices record the same game, without internet. Helping is free.

What the app can’t do

What works without buying and what Premium adds: Free or Premium. In short: recording is free, Premium is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
